Sivananda Yoga

The 5 Points of Yoga

Sivananda Yoga, developed by Swami Vishnudevananda, is a form of Hatha Yoga which focuses on the 5 points of Yoga:

- Proper Exercise

- Proper Diet

- Proper Breathing

- Proper Relaxation

- Positive Thinking & Meditation

Proper Exercise (Asana)

Yogic exercises, Asana in Sanskrit (meaning 'steady pose'), when performed correctly, act as a lubricating routine to the joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and other parts of the body by increasing circulation and flexibility. Great attention is paid to the spinal column, which connects to all other parts of the body. A healthy and strong spine promotes the health of the entire body, wherein all organs and various systems function properly.

Proper Breathing (Pranayama)

Deep, conscious breathing boosts our daily energy reserves. Practising specific yoga breathing techniques brings rejuvenation to the body and mind.

Proper Relaxation (Savasana)

Proper relaxation is a cooling system for the human body, just like the radiator of an automobile, which cools the engine when it gets hot. When the body and mind are constantly overworked, it is difficult to relax and recharge. Unnecessary and unconscious physical and mental tension uses a great amount of energy. Most city dwellers are not able to relax properly or completely. At the end of each yoga class, the final relaxation is a replenishment of the energy stores of the body. A very small amount of energy is used and one is recharged physically, mentally and spiritually.

Proper Diet

A proper diet provides the correct fuel for the body. The Yogi diet is one that consists of pure food products and helps us keep both body and mind healthy and fit.

Positive Thinking and Meditation

Positive thinking and meditation are essential to the peace of mind. Through concentration, techniques we can learn how to control the mind and eliminate negative thought patterns. Regular practice of meditation can be used to calm and focus the mind.
